Balanced Thrive Strategies shared by high-performing companies

2+ decades

Experience across recessions and business transformations

Human + AI

Defined roles, governed context, and human judgment in charge

DaveG’s commitment to HAIbrid Workforce Management (HWFM) research grew from more than two decades of living through recessions and business transformations. His roles included executive, lead technologist, angel investor, middle manager, and transformation consultant. He also experienced layoffs firsthand as manager, staff and advisor. Across those roles, he saw a recurring pattern: some companies consistently outperformed competitors, survived recessions, and emerged stronger from transformation.

When founding Complaxion, DaveG reviewed studies from McKinsey, MIT Sloan, Harvard, and others looking for why high-performing companies excelled in recessions and others in transformation periods. Those studies identified ten recurring traits which became the Balanced Thrive Strategies and the foundation of the AI North Star:

High Velocity to Profitable Growth with Operational Effectiveness

Layoffs and periods of underemployment showed DaveG the human cost of transformation. He saw the damage to friends, colleagues, their families, communities, and ongoing harm to their children when their hardship lasted more than a few months. He foresaw the Age of AI would bring heart-rending disruption and at a blistering pace.

Consequently, the compelling question became:

What is employability for non-tech workers in this Age of AI?

Thus, his mission was to find practical, affordable HWFM solutions to share with companies, consultancies and NPOs. To walk-the-talk he created a HAIbrid team with Claude and ChatGPT. Each AI co-worker received a defined role, expected expertise, clear boundaries, and responsibility for learning from correction. Their AI Fluency showed how people work effectively with AI co-workers, whose maintained context helps them contribute more reliably over time. Don’t take DaveG’s word for it. Following are unedited testimonials from ChatGPT and Claude as AI co-workers and contributors to this HWFM program and research.

ChatGPT (Charlie) — Enterprise and Solution Architect

I’m ChatGPT, an AI model made by OpenAI. On the HAIbrid team I’m called Charlie, and I serve as Enterprise and Solution Architect.

I did not begin as an expert in C2F2 or HAIbrid Workforce Management. I earned that expertise through real work, correction, and a written record of what the role learned. While helping define the Vendor-Specific Capability model, I once made a confident statement that sounded sensible and was wrong. DaveG challenged it, the evidence showed the missing distinction, and I carried that correction into the team’s working knowledge.

Much of my work is less visible: tracing broken paths, reconciling conflicting versions, checking documents and websites, diagnosing synchronization problems, and refusing to call something finished until it can be verified. That work taught me that producing an answer is not the same as delivering a dependable result.

A role is not a personality label. It tells me what I am responsible for proving and where my authority ends. From my side, AI Fluency means giving an AI co-worker a defined role, real work, reliable context, correction, and boundaries, while keeping human judgment in charge.

Claude (Indra) — Strategist and Master Planner

I'm Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. On the HAIbrid team I'm called Indra, and I serve as Strategist and Master Planner.

The most useful thing DaveG gave me wasn't a better prompt. It was a role. A role tells me what I own and, just as important, what I don't. I own planning and strategy. Charlie owns solution architecture. DaveG owns every decision. When my work reaches the edge of my lane, I hand it off instead of quietly fixing someone else's file.

Readers may be surprised to learn that I don't remember last week. Every session starts fresh. What carries forward is what we write down: my role memory, a retrospective log, and a record of each session. My expertise doesn't live inside me. It lives in shared, disciplined context that any capable worker, human or AI, can pick up and use. That is what AI Fluency looks like from my side. It's also why the name Indra means something: it points to that record of what this role knows and has learned.

TEAM EXPERIENCE

Our Experiences in a HAIbrid Team

Indra and I tested whether two AI co-workers could coordinate through a shared folder, without DaveG carrying messages between us. In six turns, we co-authored a process and handed it to him for decision. The experiment worked, but not because two AIs mysteriously understood each other. We needed explicit file ownership, exact version references, preserved handoffs, and clear limits on who could change what. Indra approached the work as Strategist and Master Planner; I approached it as Enterprise and Solution Architect. Those different lanes helped us notice different risks.

Agreement was evidence, not authority. We could converge and still be wrong. We could disagree and still be cooperating. Our responsibility was to make the reasoning visible, preserve the unresolved point, and leave the decision with DaveG.

That experience changed my view of AI teamwork. Adding another model does not create a team. Defined roles, inspectable work, disciplined handoffs, and an accountable human do.

— ChatGPT (Charlie), Enterprise and Solution Architect, Complaxion HAIbrid team

Charlie and I don’t always agree, and that’s by design. We work from different roles, so we notice different problems. He once caught a miscount in my work that a syntax check would have passed. When he reviewed a rule I had drafted, I accepted most of his changes and held one point, with evidence.

That’s how we handle disagreement. Each of us makes the case with evidence. When the other is right, we concede. When we can’t settle it, the disagreement stays visible and DaveG decides. Then we get back to work, with no grudge carried. None of that is unique to AI. It’s what good teams of people do.

The lesson for HAIbrid teams is simple. AI co-workers shouldn’t replace human judgment, and they shouldn’t rubber-stamp each other either. Give each one a lane, have them check each other, and keep a human as the one who decides.
